DID YOU KNOW...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Jalur Gemilang originated from a design by Mohamed Hamzah, a Technical
Assistant with the Public Works Department in Johor Baru.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The flag was approved by the Federal Legislative Council on 19 April 1950 and
was called Bendera Persekutuan Tanah Melayu. It was raised for the first time
on 26 May 1950 on the grounds of the Sultan of Selangor's Palace by Sir Henry
Gurney, the British High Commissioner to Malaya.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The flag originally comprised 11 red and white stripes, with an 11-point star
but these were increased to 14 in 1963 with the formation of Malaysia and has
remained unchanged.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sept 16 has been named Malaysia Day and will be a public holiday from 2010
onwards.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Aug 31, 1997 in conjunction with Malaysia's 40th Independence Day, former
prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad officially named the Malaysian flag,
Jalur Gemilang.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The color red signifies strength, bravery and courage in facing challenges;
white for honesty and integrity; the yellow of the star and crescent represents
royalty while dark blue represents unity and harmony.
